Steve and I met with Bellcomb Structural Panels yesterday. “And?” you ask. I’m happy to share that they are my go to suppliers of lightweight panels – both vertical and horizontal installation since the early ‘90s. That’s when folks were transitioning to high performance yachts and expecting the luxury of marble and granite. Engineering requirements and weight limitations for high performance yachts did not include a weight and balance tolerance for solid stone panels.
Popular surfaces like Corian, Granite and other stone were very popular in homes, hospitality and commercial installations but posed unique challenges to boat and yacht designs. To solve that challenge, marine design pioneers like Bell Design Group turned to Boeing’s aviation design and products that could transition to the marine industry. Quite a few of Boeing’s engineers were active members of The Society of Boat and Yacht Design (SBYD) which was then active in the Seattle area. Through them, Bell Design Group linked up with a stone fabrication pioneer already meeting classification and load requirements for private jets so it was a slam dunk to work with them on Bell Design Group projects. They have always exceeded my expectations which says a LOT! For example; in the early 90’s I was presenting an IBEX seminar on lightweight interior construction to boat builders and designers so I asked for some samples to illustrate my presentation. They sent samples and built a 24” square cube table for a prize drawing. That original company was Stonwurks in Kansas now merged with and renamed Bellcomb Structural Panels. Check them out at www.bellcomb.com. You’ll be glad you did.
Our meeting yesterday was to discuss new ideas, product application and direction for our interior design needs and now I can’t wait for the perfect project in which to introduce them. It was a “Woo Hoo Day!”
