PROGRAM: Open air restaurant and bar with take-out window. Contextually engaged casual hospitality space with a high importance on true local ambience.
Located in the infamous last block of Washington Blvd before the beach boardwalk (known to old school locals as Washington Square), WSQ is a family-oriented pizza place offering a laid back vibe and open air atmosphere.
The design of WSQ is rooted in Venice’s beach culture, with strong reference to the deconstructivism of Gehry and Morphosis, as well as engagement with locals for artwork. The main dining area has a diaphanous roof that allows dappled sunlight during the day, and has embedded soft lighting at night, defining a breezy vibe. The bar and seating are designed with flexibility for families and large groups. Finishing out the design is a take out window with a “Vans” checkerboard aesthetic – a nod to the origins of local skate culture - open for the wandering tourist and late-night bar hopper alike.
In addition to the architecture and interiors, BDG developed the brand’s logos and palette.
